Norwegian data centres and data centre sites offer renewable, affordable energy and excellent connectivity to European data hubs. The data centre ecosystem also includes a highly competent IT and technology sector backed by a government commitment to develop the industry and build a national value chain.

Vestland provides grounds for new sustainable data centres

A new partnership between the energy company Eviny and Skygard is adding momentum to Vestland’s rapidly growing data centre industry and strengthening the region’s position as a leading Nordic destination for sustainable digital infrastructure.

The two companies recently announced a cooperation on developing new data centre capacity in Vestland, with sites in Simadalen in Eidfjord identified as one of the locations under evaluation. The initiative is driven by growing demand for AI infrastructure, cloud services and high-performance computing powered by renewable energy.

The work is supported by public commitment to data centre development. In 2018, the Norwegian Government launched the world’s first national data centre strategy, including tax reductions and incentives to improve connectivity.

Value creation potential

As demand for AI and cloud infrastructure continues to accelerate globally, Vestland is positioning itself at the centre of Norway’s next wave of industrial and digital development.

- This initiative confirms Vestland is becoming one of the most attractive regions in Northern Europe for sustainable digital infrastructure. We are seeing strong international interest because the region offers a unique combination of renewable energy, industrial competence and scalable capacity. Developments like Eviny and Skygard’s initiative can create long-term value through new investments, supplier opportunities, competence building and green industrial growth across Vestland, says Investment Manager Vidar Totland in Invest in Vestland.

Earlier this year, British 3i Infrastructure is investing approximately EUR 300 million in Lefdal Mine Datacenter (LMD) in Nordfjord. The transaction values the green data centre facility at several billion NOK and marks one of the largest international tech investments on the Norwegian west coast in recent years. Photo: LMD.

Competitive advantages in Vestland

The growing concentration of projects reflects a wider shift in how Europe is approaching digital infrastructure, with increasing focus on energy efficiency, sustainability and long-term access to renewable power.

The collaboration represents another milestone in the development of a regional ecosystem for large-scale digital infrastructure in Western Norway. Vestland has increasingly attracted international attention due to its combination of abundant renewable hydropower, available grid capacity, cool climate and strong industrial expertise. These advantages have already led to several major projects across the region.

Among them is Lefdal Mine Data Centre, one of Europe’s most recognised sustainable data centre facilities. Built deep inside a former mine in Nordfjord, the facility combines renewable energy with natural fjord cooling and is now preparing to host Norway’s national AI and supercomputing infrastructure.

At the same time, Kitebrook Infra is developing large-scale data centre capacity in Masfjorden through projects in Matre and Leirdøla. The developments are expected to contribute significant future capacity for AI-driven and energy-intensive digital services and one of the world's greenest data centre sites.
